As the last US-American man remaining, Sam Querrey headlined Sunday’s night session at the US Open beating Mischa Zverev from Germany 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in just one hour and 16 minutes. The 17th seed showed an impressive performance, firing 18 aces and 55 winners.

“I really couldn’t have done anything better out there tonight, I was in the zone,” Querrey told ESPN in his on-court interview. “It was my first time playing out here at night, so I wanted to make the most of it.

“I was a little nervous at first, but I came out playing hot. Tennis is a game of momentum and once I broke early, I felt like I was off to the races. I felt comfortable three minutes into the match and that was the key.”

Querrey, who appeared in the fourth round of the US Open for the first time since 2010, will next take on big-hitting Kevin Anderson of South Africa. The 29-year-old is the first male player from the United States to reach the stage of the final eight at Flushing Meadows since both Andy Roddick and John Isner did so in 2011. He will also become the No. 1 US-American in the ATP Rankings for the first time since July 2013.

Kvitova Sets Williams Clash

Earlier in the evening, Petra Kvitova dispatched reigning Wimbledon champion and No.3 seed Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, 7-6, 6-3. The No.13-seeded Czech won 78 per cent of her first service points and stroke 24 winners to secure victory in one hour and 46 minutes.

Next up for Kvitova will be two-time US Open champion Venus Williams, the No.9 seed, in the quarterfinals.

“I think that she’s playing amazing on the majors this year,” Kvitova said about Williams. “I mean, she is really playing very, very well on the big stages. She played the final of Wimbledon. She’s a champion. It’s what we all know.”
