Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Teymuraz Gabashvili headlined first round action at the €64,000 LV Copa Sevilla on Monday evening with the Spaniard celebrating his third win over the Russian in as many meetings between the two.
Gimeno-Traver won 75 per cent of his first service points and the tie-break of the final set 7-4 to seal a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory in two hours and 42 minutes. The 32-year-old from Valencia advanced to the second round at ATP Challenger level for the first time since Mohammedia in Morocco in October last year.
Next up for Gimeno-Traver will be the winner of the encounter between fourth seed Taro Daniel of Japan and fellow Spaniard Carlos Taberner.
Earlier in the day, #NextGenATP player Jaume Munar upset the tournament’s number eight Gastao Elias from Portugal, winning 6-4, 6-4. The 20-year-old Spaniard won 54 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 17 minutes. Munar will next face another player from Portugal, meeting Goncalo Oliveira for a place in the quarterfinals.
Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime battled past Frenchman Maxime Janvier 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 to set a second round clash with sixth favourite Adam Pavlasek. The 22-year-old from the Czech Republic outlasted Spanish qualifier Mario Vilella Martinez 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 54 minutes.
