On a day filled with stop and starts due to Hurricane Irma, only one first round match of the $50,000 Atlantic Tire Championships could be finished at Cary Park on Tuesday.

In their first meeting since 2012, Luke Bambridge defeated former University of Virginia standout Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in three sets. Both Bambridge and Kwiatkowski had difficulty capitalizing on break points, but Bambridge had his best service games in the final set, winning 79% of his first serve points and serving four aces. The 22-year-old US-American securec a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 victory in two hours and 26 minutes.

Fifteen matches are scheduled for Wednesday, including three matches that started on Tuesday. The No.1 seed and 2016 Finalist, Ernest Escobedo, faces local wildcard Patrick Kypson. Kypson, having recently won the Boys 18 Nationals, received a bid to the main draw of the 2017 US Open. Kypson and Escobedo practiced against each other while on the grounds of the US Open.

Marcelo Arevalo, fresh from his Bogota Challenger title last week, takes on No.3 Michael Mmoh. With his recent title in Bogota, Arevalo became the first player from El Salvador to win a Challenger title. This will be the first meeting for Arevalo and Mmoh.
