Team Europe wins the inaugural Laver Cup with a 15-9 win victory over Team World on Sunday evening in Prague.

The third and final day began with the hosts enjoying a 9-3 advantage but US-Americans Jack Sock and John Isner added three points to Team World’s tally by beating Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic and Marin Cilic of Croatia in doubles action.

#NextGenATP star Alexander Zverev edged past Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4 to give Team Europe an overall 12-6 lead, and hand Rafael Nadal the opportunity to seal victory.

The World No. 1 from Spain, however, suffered a surprise 7-5, 7-6 loss to Isner forcing him to hand the baton to team-mate Federer, who eventually got the job done.

In the end, it was Roger Federer, who fought back to beat Nick Kyrgios from Australia 4-6, 7-6(6), 11-9 and evenutally secured the first title for Team Europe.

“I was ready to go – I had to be,” said Federer, who ended up contributing three victories and six points to the hosts’ victory. “That’s what a team member does. The boys played fantastic all weekend, but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday. The Team World boys have been great, in the doubles especially, and we knew it was going to be tough. I was looking at getting ready for a doubles at the very end. I’m very pleased and relived that we did win the singles and got it done.”

“I’m most proud of these guys – they fought with their heart and soul and put everything into this,” John McEnroe said in tribute to his underdog squad during the trophy ceremony. “And we were so, so close to pulling this off.”
