Juan Carlos Ferrero has officially declined the offer by the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) to become the country’s new Davis Cup captain. The former World No. 1 has started to work with Germany’s youngster Alexander Zverev this summer and wants to continue this partnership at least until the end of the season.

Ferrero told in a communication:

“The RFET has contacted me to see if I would like to be captain of the Spanish Davis Cup Team. It has always been one of my goals to remain an active part of Spanish sport and I do so by running my academy. I am very sad to be unable to accept this possibility at this time, since at the beginning of August I started a collaboration with the tennis player Alexander Zverev …

“I am grateful to the RFET and its president for their confidence and hope and wish that they can give me this opportunity in the future. I take the opportunity to wish success to the future captain, who will have all my support …”

Bruguera Set To Become New Captain

According to different Spanish media, the RFET will announce Sergi Bruguera as the new captain. The 46-year-old from Catalonia won consecutive singles titles at the French Open in 1993 and 1994. He is currently the director of the Bruguera Tennis Academy Top Team and works with Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Two weeks ago, Conchita Martínez was fired when the RFET board of directors unanimously decided to “make a change in the leadership of its professional teams … in order to face new challenges in 2018.” Martínez had been head of the Fed Cup team since 2013 and of the Davis Cup team since 2015.
