Kern rallied from a set down to overcome Marc-Andrea Huesler from Switzerland 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. The sixth seed and runner-up here in 2015 as well as in 2016 broke serve three times to prevail after one hour and 52 minutes.

Masur beat Evan Hoyt of Great Britain 6-4, 6-4. The World No. 292 saved the only break point he faced, capitalizing on two of his own to secure victory in one hour and 12 minutes.

“I haven’t lost a set so far this week, so I am very happy and pleased with my performance. I am looking forward to tomorrow,” Masur told.

Kern won the only previous meeting between the two at the ITF Futures in Saarlouis on clay two years ago.

Later in the day, Scott Griekspoor from the Netherlands fought past eighth favourite Elmar Ejupovic of Germany 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. The encounter lasted two hours and five minutes. The 26-year-old will next face Andriej Kapas of Poland. The seventh seed defeated German Sami Reinwein 6-1, 6-4.
