MONTREAL, November 7, 2017 (Press Release)

The Romanian Tennis Federation announced Tuesday that the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas tie between Canada and Romania will take place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and will be played on an indoor hard court surface. The choice was made by the Romanian team for the World Group II first round tie, which will take place on February 10th and 11th. The player nominations will be announced at a later date.

“We will prepare ourselves for this important encounter in the coming months. In fact, we will all meet for a training camp in Florida in December,” stated Sylvain Bruneau, captain of the Canadian Fed Cup team. “We are well aware of the magnitude of the task at hand, but we have proven in the past that we are capable of causing surprises.”

Canada will face off against Romania for a third time. At the last meeting between the two countries, which took place in Montreal in 2015, Romania won 3-2. It was a young Canadian team led by Françoise Abanda and Bianca Andreescu who surprised Kazakhstan last April to book their ticket into World Group II. The Canadian team is currently ranked 15th in the world, while Romania is ranked 12th. The winner of this encounter will qualify for the World Group II play-offs in April 2018.
