LONDON, December 4, 2017
Juan Carlos Ferrero won Sunday’s title match between two former top-ranked players, beating Marat Safin of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the season ending finale to the ATP Champions Tour, held at the Royal Abert Hall in London.
In the event’s 21st year, some of the most decorated players in ATP World Tour history made their way through the field to set up an exciting final. Ferrero claimed his second ATP Champions Tour title of 2017.
“I enjoyed the match playing with Marat. We have been good friends for a long time,” Ferrero said. “It was a great match. I think we’re both in good shape and I enjoyed it so much. We try to have fun in these matches.”
Their head-to-head record on the ATP World Tour is tied at 6-6. Ferrero works as coach of German young gun Alexander Zverev. Safin retired from professional tennis in 2009 and entered politics in Russia two years later.
“It was the third day [of play], so it was pretty tough,” Safin said. “Too much running over the past few days and the third one I was just a little bit not at my best and plus Juan Carlos is in good shape, really good shape. He plays every day, he serves really well.”
