STARNBERG, December 12, 2017

Roger Federer has been named Swiss Sports Personality of the Year a record seven times in Zurich on Sunday. Federer’s 2017 season marked a return to excellence for him. The current World No. 2 had the most number of grand slams since 2009, most titles since 2007, and highest win percentage since 2006. Statistically, this season was his best since 2007.

Federer clearly prevailed over the world champions Nino Schurter (mountain bike) and Beat Feuz (alpine ski racer). The 36-year-old succeeds Fabian Cancellara, who won the trophy a year ago.

The winners of the award are chosen by Swiss journalists and TV viewers. Their results count for 50% each. Federer won in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2014 and 2017.

Federer couldn’t pick up the award in person as he was practicing in Dubai, but he appeared on a giant screen. “It’s been a massive year – perhaps my favourite! If 2018 is half as successful, then I’ll be happy,” he said.
