NÜRNBERG, December 13, 2017
Organizers of the NÜRNBERGER Versicherungscup announced on Wednesday that Julia Görges will return to the $250,000 WTA International event, held from 19 to 26 May 2018 at the venue of the 1. Fc Nürnberg.
“I am looking forward to playing again in front of my home crowd,” Görges told during a visit of the famous Christmas market in Nürnberg.
Career-Best Season
The 29-year-old German enjoyed a career-best season in 2017. In October, Görges won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow by defeating Daria Kasatkina in the final. It was her first singles title since 2011, which propelled her back into the top 20, and as a result guaranteed her qualification into the season-ending WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.
She advanced to the final stage in Zhuhai for the first time in her career, and defeated Coco Vandeweghe to clinch the biggest title of her career. Görges finishes 2017 off with a nine match winning streak as well as a career high ranking of World No. 14.
Loyal To Nürnberg
For tournament organizer Sandra Reichel, a pre-Christmas wish comes true: “Jule has always been one of the absolute crowd pleasers in Nürnberg. After her fantastic season in 2017, she is sure to be one of the favorites next year. In any case, we are very happy that Jule is loyal to the NÜRNBERGER Versicherungscup.”
The tournament is played on outdoor clay and will celebrate its sixth edition next year.
“The event is characterized by a familiar atmosphere, giving fans the opportunity to get very close to the world class action. We are very pleased about the commitment of Julia Görges, who has shown great achievements on all surfaces in the past months,” said Dr. med. Armin Zitzmann, CEO of NÜRNBERGER Versicherung.
