MELBOURNE, January 27, 2018

Caroline Wozniacki is the champion of the 2018 Australian Open. The 27-year-old from Denmark fought past top seed Simona Halep of Romania 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4 in Saturday’s singles final on Rod Laver Arena.

Both women showed high-quality tennis with Wozniacki winning two more points in the end. The indefatigable Dane won a 16-shot rally and a 10-shot rally from 30-30 to break Halep in the 10th game of the final set and clinch her maiden Grand Slam title after two hours and 49 minutes.

Halep Runner-Up For The Third Time

“It’s not easy to talk now but first of all I want to congratulate Caroline. She played amazing. Many congratulations to your team, to your father, everything you’ve done since you started to play professional tennis. Good luck for the future,” Halep said during her runner-up on-court speech.

“It’s been a great tournament for me. Of course I’m sad I couldn’t win today but Caroline was better than me today. But I will fight and hopefully I will face another challenge like I did today.”

“I would like to thank my team. It’s really tough work everyday. Thanks for being by my side all the time, my family, to the people watching at home, sad that I couldn’t make it the third time, but maybe the fourth time will be with luck.”

Wozniacki New World No. 1

Six years to the day she last sat atop the WTA rankings, Caroline Wozniacki returns to No.1.

“I’ve dreamt of this moment for so many years. My voice is shaking. I never cry, but this is a very emotional moment,” an emotional Wozniacki told.

“I want to congratulate Simona, I know it’s a tough day. I’m sorry that I had to win today but I’m sure we’ll have many matches in the future and it was an incredible match and an incredible fight and…again, I’m sorry.”

“I want to thank my team. My Dad, you’ve been there the entire step of the way from when I was seven years old. I want to thank my fiancee, I was a nervous wreck this morning, I wanted to win so bad, but you calmed me down.”
