Germany has won the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round against Australia 3-1 in Brisbane.
World No.5 Alexander Zverev defeated Nick Kyrgios on Pat Rafter Arena Sunday 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-2 to send Germany through to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2014.
Zverev sent down 15 aces, winning 80 per cent of his first service points and broke his opponent four times to prevail after one hour and 48 minutes.

“We didn’t want to go down one-zero against someone like Australia,’’ told the 20-year-old Hamburg native, who has improved his Davis Cup singles record to 3-3. “Nick is someone who is a great player and when he plays with confidence it is almost impossible to beat him.”
“It is awesome. It is an amazing feeling. Thanks to all my teammates without them, it would have been impossible. This is just the beginning for us!”
Germany will now meet the winner of Spain and Great Britain in April.
“Winning against a really strong Australian team it makes us very confident also for the next rounds, for the next upcoming years,’’ Germany’s team captain Michael Kohlmann said. “I think we showed that we have a lot of good players, a lot of strong players and all the four guys who are here … they put something into the tie and I think that in the end we showed that we are able to go further than this.’’

Australia will compete in the World Group Play-offs from 14 to 16 September to maintain their position in the top eight.
“I would have given of my Brisbane title to have won this tie,” Kyrgios said. “I ultimately had a pretty good summer but it’s tough to think about all that stuff when you lost today.”
A total of 5,938 spectators attended Pat Rafter Arena on day three with a total of 17,095 attending the three-day tie.
