MONTREAL, February  13, 2018 (TC Press Release)

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced Tuesday that Canada will face Ukraine in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II playoffs. The tie will be played in Canada on April 21 and 22, 2018. The location, the choice of surface, and the composition of both teams will be announced later.

“Our young team has worked hard this past year to get us back into World Group II, a place we hadn’t been since February 2016. Despite the loss to Romania this past weekend, our players were able to gain valuable Fed Cup experience,” said Sylvain Bruneau, captain of the Canadian Fed Cup team. “We will give it our all in this playoff tie to try to maintain our place among the world’s elite.”

In last weekend’s World Group II first round tie, the Canadian team of Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON), Bianca Andreescu (Mississauga, ON), Katherine Sebov (Toronto, ON) and Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa, ON) fell to Romania by a score of 3-1.

Ukraine lost their World Group II first round tie against Australia by a score of 3-2. The team was composed of Marta Kostyuk, Lyudmyla Kichenok, Nadiia Kichenok and Dasha Lopatetskaya.

This will be the second meeting between Canada and Ukraine, with Canada winning their previous World Group II playoff in 2013 by a score of 3-2. Canada is currently ranked no. 18 on the Fed Cup rankings while Ukraine sits at no. 15.

The winner of the tie will earn a spot in World Group II for 2019, while the losing nation will be relegated to the zonal group.
