Gilles Simon from France will not be part of the quarterfinals line-up of the Challenger Cherbourg La-Manche, as the top seed of the €43,000 ATP Challenger event fell to Mats Moraing on Thursday evening.

What looked like anything but a competitive match on paper, between a 13-time ATP World Tour winner and the 25-year-old German with just one ATP Challenger title under his belt, turned into exactly that. Moraing struck 13 aces, saved all three break points he faced, capitalizing on two of his own to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and six minutes.

Moraing will next take on Swedish qualifier Mikael Ymer. The teenager from Stockholm defeated Frenchman Gleb Sakharov 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 27 minutes.

The highest ranked player left in the singles draw in Brittany is Maximilian Marterer. The tournament’s No. 2 from Germany edged past Luca Vanni of Italy 6-4, 6-3 to reach the stage of the final eight. Marterer faces Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin, who knocked out No. 5 seed Oscar Otte 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Constant Lestienne emerged victorious from the all-French-encounter with Mathias Bourgue 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The 25-year-old wild card entry won 51 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 41 minutes. Next up for Lestienne will be Tobias Kamke of Germany.

Kenny de Schepper will play #NextGenATP Italian Matteo Berrettini in the remaining match-up.
