Stefano Napolitano knocked out sixth favourite Jaume Munar of Spain 7-5, 7-6. The World No. 2107 from Biella saved all three break points he faced, converting one of his own to secure victory in one hour and 35 minutes. Next up for Napolitano will be Thiemo de Bakker from the Netherlands.

Sonego will be joined by fellow Italian Luca Vanni in the second round. The 32-year-old wild card entry defeated Pedro Martínez from Spain 6-3, 6-4. Vanni struck nine aces, winning 83 per cent of his first service points to finish the encounter in one hour and 17 minutes. Vanni will take on No. 3 seed Jurgen Zopp.
