MIAMI, March 21, 2018

Following a straightforward win against Allie Kiick on Monday, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada fell to Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 4-6, 3-6 in the second round of qualifying at the Miami Open presented by Itaú.

In the pair’s first meeting, the World No. 116 from Stockholm lost her serve four times but capitalized on six of her own break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 16 minutes. It is the first time this season that Bouchard did not receive a wild card into the main draw of a WTA event and the former World No. 5 failed to reach that stage of the tournament with her qualifying loss. Peterson will face fellow qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva of Russia in the opening round of the main draw.

The top seeds of the women’s qualifying also prevailed. No. 1 seed Monica Niculescu of Romania eased past Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer 6-1, 6-3 to face Yulia Putintseva next. No. 2 seed Polona Hercog of Slovenia defeated Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 6-2 to open her main draw campaign at Crandon Park against Andrea Petkovic from Germany, who also battled through the qualifying.

Unseeded US-American wild card entry Serena Williams and Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka will headline Wednesday’s first round main draw action.
