MONTREAL, April 10, 2018 (Press Release)
It was on Tuesday that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) held the official draw for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-offs. The Canadian Davis Cup team will face Netherlands from September 14 to 16, a tie which will take place in Canada. The choice of surface and the site as well as the player nominations will be determined at a later date.
After overcoming India by a score of 3-2 last September, Canada secured its place in the World Group for the seventh consecutive year. They then faced the tough task of opposing a higher-ranked Croatian team this past February to try to qualify for the Davis Cup quarter-finals, a place they hadn’t been since 2013. In the first encounter between the two nations, it was Croatia who overpowered the Canadian team with a 3-1 victory.
Canada will now attempt to conserve its place in the elite World Group when they take on Netherlands this September. It will be the fourth encounter between the two countries. Canada’s talent pool is becoming increasingly deeper, with three players now in the Top 100 and seven in the Top 200, in addition to having experienced doubles players. Canada is currently ranked 14th in the world, while Netherlands is 18th. The winner of this tie will retain their spot in the World Group for 2019, while the losing nation will be relegated to the Zonal Group.
