Unseeded Jay Clarke caused the upset of the opening round at the CDMX Open in Mexico City, knocking out the tournament’s No. 1 Yannick Hanfmann of Germany on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-3.
The 19-year-old from Great Britain, who clinched his fourth ITF Pro Circuit career title in Doha earlier this season, withstood seven aces, won 88 per cent of his own first service points and broke his opponent three times to advance in only 56 minutes. It was Clarke’s second win over Hanfmann in as many meetings between the two. The World No. 235 beat his 114 places better ranked opponent in at the San Luis Open Challenger two weeks ago. Next up for Clarke will be Alessandro Basso of Italy.
After lifting the trophy of the Visit Panamá Cup trophy last Saturday, Carlos Berlocq continues his good run of form on the ATP Challenger Tour. The No. 3 seed at the Club Deportivo Chapultepec rallied past US-American wild card entry Sebastian Korda 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Berlocq won 52 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and five minutes. The Argentine veteran will next take on Jan Choinski of Germany.

No. 2 seed Thiago Monteiro of Brazil advanced to the second round with a comfortabel 6-3, 6-3 win over local favourite Manuel Sanchez. The World No. 125 outpointed the Mexican 71-55 to seal victory in one hour and 26 minutes. Monteiro will next face Argentine qualifier Juan-Ignacio Londero.
