HAMBURG, April 25, 2018
Organizers of the German Open presented by Kampmann announced on Wednesday that Dominic Thiem will return to the Rothenbaum this year for the first time since 2014. The ATP World Tour 500 clay-court event will be held in Hamburg from 21 to 29 July 2018.
The World No. 7 from Austria clinched one title this season at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. At his only previous appearance in Hamburg, Thiem advanced to the Round of the last 16 four years ago, beating Marcel Granollers and Jiri Vesely before he eventually lost to Leonardo Mayer of Argentina. He could become the first player from Austria to lift the trophy in Germany’s second-largest city.
“Dominic Thiem was the first of the so-called ‘young guns’, who has established himself in the absolute world class. Especially on clay, he has proven his extra class many times”, says tournament director Michael Stich about the 24-year-old Austrian.
“I am delighted to be able to present our spectators one of the best clay court players in the world this year. As a top 10-player, he is one of the top favorites at the German Open 2018 presented by Kampmann.”
