Maximilian Marterer extended his Roland Garros debut experience for at least another round by knocking out No. 24 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada 5-7, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Court 1 on Thursday afternoon. The 22-year-old German landed 65 per cent of his first serves, hitting three aces and breaking his opponent four times to prevail after three hours and 11 minutes.

“I needed to take the balls pretty early with my returns, as his serve bounces a lot. The longer the match lasted, the better I found the right length for my shots. This was probably key today,” Marterer told after his second top 30 win.

He follows Alexander Zverev as the second German player into the third round of the men’s draw. Marterer will next challenge lucky loser Jurgen Zopp of Estonia, who recovered from two sets down to beat Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and 35 minutes.

Dominic Thiem secured his spot in the third round for the third straight year with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over #NextGenATP Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. The 24-year-old Austrian, who held a two-sets-to-one lead when darkness interrupted overnight, will next take on Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Marin Cilic has reached the third round for the eighth time on his 12th Roland Garros appearance. The tournament’s No. 3 from Croatia edged past Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5.

One British journey ends, the other continues

Cameron Norrie is set to become the British No 2 on Monday with Andy Murray still sidelined from the courts. His French Open campaign, however, is over, but he can take plenty of positives heading into the grass-court season. Norrie lost to Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(3).

Kyle Edmund, meanwhile, flies the British flag solo now after reaching the third round for the second year in a row. The 23-year-old defeated Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-0, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Edmund now comes up against Fabio Fognini for the first time on Tour, with the Italian a one-time quarter-finalist here back in 2011.

Muguruza advances

Garbine Muguruza is through to the third round of the women’s draw after an easy day’s work for the 2016 champion. The No. 3 seed of Spain beat Fiona Ferro 6-4, 6-3 to reach the third round after one hour and 26 minutes on court.

“It’s always tricky when you face a French, a young, talented player,” Muguruza said, during her post-match press conference. “Probably wasn’t the best tennis out there, but I’m happy that I managed to fight and to win and be in the third round.”

Muguruza will next face 2010 French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur of Australia, who ousted No.30 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, 6-2, 7-6(1)

• Peter Gojowczyk received a tough fine of €25,000 after retiring in the opening round at 1-6, 0-2 after 41 minutes against Briton Cameron Norrie. According to ITF officials, the 28-year-old German should have left his spot to a lucky loser. Gojowczyk finished runner-up at the Geneva Open last Saturday. He announced to appeal.
