STUTTGART, June 12, 2018
Due to bad weather only three matches could be finished on Tuesday at the MercedesCup, leaving a stockpile of first round encounters still to be played. Denis Istomin snapped a seven-match losing streak to notch his first win at the ATP 250 grass-court event, upsetting two-time Stuttgart runner-up and No. 5 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(2), 7-6(3).
In a match without any break points, the 31-year-old from Uzbekistan won 53 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 41 minutes. Istomin will next take on German veteran Florian Mayer.
Marton Fucsovics of Hungary beat US-American qualifier Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-4. The World No. 46 from Budapest saved all five break points he faced, converting both of his own two chances to prevail in 68 minutes. Next up for Fucsovics will be either No. 7 seeded Canadian Milos Raonic or Mirza Basic from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Gilles Simon eased past Italian qualifer Matteo Viola 6-0, 6-3 in one hour and 10 minutes to face the winner of the encounter between Spaniard Feliciano López and Viktor Troicki of Serbia.
Top seed Roger Federer will open his title bid on Wednesday taking on Mischa Zverev not before 3 pm on Centre Court of the Tennis Club Weissenhof.
