CALTANISSETTA, June 18, 2018
Jaume Munar claimed his third ATP Challenger title, his second of the season, winning the €127,000 clay-court event Citta’ Di Caltanissetta. The #NextGenATP Spaniard defeated Italy’s Matteo Donati in the singles final 6-2, 7-6(2) on Sunday evening.
Munar saved all six break points he faced and converted two of his own five chances. The 21-year-old from Mallorca, who lifted the trophy in Prostejov last week, secured victory in one hour and 28 minutes.
“I am happy to have won this tournament and to have discovered this wonderful city. The success leads me to hope to come back here again next year to defend the title. I dedicate the victory to my team and my family,” Munar said.
“It is very rare to play a Challenger final in front of so many people. I’m very happy with how I played this week. After a few days of rest, I will go to England to compete in the Wimbledon qualifications.”
Munar takes away from Sicily €18,200 in prize money as well as 125 ATP ranking points, breaking into the top 100 for the first time. The Barcelona resident is now ranked on a career high World No. 87.
Federico Gaio and Andrea Pellegrino from Italy clinched the doubles crown. The wild card entries defeated Blaz Rola of Slovenia and Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic in Friday’s final 7-6(4), 7-6(5). The encounter lasted one hour and 44 minutes.
