TA Press Release, June 23, 2018
Australian Open women’s champion Caroline Wozniacki fought for every win during January’s tournament, including her classic second-round battle with Croatian Jana Fett.
Wozniacki ended up winning the match 3-6 6-2 7-5, coming back from 5-1 down in the third set and saving two match points in the process.
“I was thinking at that point, ‘She still has to win four more balls to win this match’, and ‘Don’t make it easy for her’,” Wozniacki said in January.
“At 5-1, 40-15, I felt like I was one foot out of the tournament. She served a great serve down the T, as well. It was just slightly out. I was kind of lucky.
“Then I felt her tighten up just slightly. I thought to myself, ‘You know what? At this point, make her win it, don’t give it to her’.”
The Dane went on to win her first Grand Slam title, defeating World No.1 Simona Halep 7-6(2) 3-6 6-4 in another classic match.
The match between Wozniacki and Fett is one of many classic matches to be featured on the Australian Open YouTube channel, in the lead-up to the 2019 Grand Slam tournament.
“Caroline Wozniacki fought for every win leading to her first Grand Slam title, including this classic against Jana Fett,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said.
“She fought her way back from the brink of defeat, which was incredible to watch.
“The women’s draw had so many quality matches this year, and this second-round battle between Caroline and Jana is right up there.”
