Only one of the three seeded players in action on Tuesday advanced to the next round of the Turkish Airlines Open Antalya, as Robin Haase from the Netherlands fought past Russian veteran Mikhail Yozhny 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-4. The match was suspended on Monday night due to darkness and resumed with the start of the final set.
The tournament’s No. 5 fired 18 aces, saved 10 of the 11 break points he faced, converting two of his own to seal victory in two hours and 34 minutes. Haase will take on Guillermo Garcia-López in the second round.
Jiri Vesely edged out third seed Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals. The 24-year-old Czech won 55 per cent of the total points played to celebrate his second victory over the Spaniard in as many meetings betwen the two.
Next up for Vesely will be Nikoloz Basilashvili, who battled past fifth favourite Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. The World No. 76 from Georgia finished the encounter after one hour and 53 minutes.
