Three of the four German players in action on Monday advanced to the second round of the Sparkassen Open in Braunschweig. Marvin Netuschil defeated fellow qualifier Dragos Dima of Romania 6-3, 6-1.
The World No. 561 won 86 per cent of his first service points and broke his opponent five times to claim his first main draw victory at ATP Challenger level in one hour and seven minutes. Next up for Netuschil will be either French qualifier Maxime Janvier or the tournament’s top seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.
Daniel Masur also made it into the second round. The 23-year-old wild card entry beat Stefano Travaglia of Italy 6-4, 7-5. “Good match today. Always nice to play at home. Tomorrow practice and next match on Wednesday,” Masur commented on facebook.
The Munich resident will next challenge the winner of the encounter between Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador and No. 9 seed Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia.
Mats Moraing will join his two fellow Germans in the next round. The 26-year-old eased past Belgian qualifier Kimmer Coppejans 6-2, 6-1. The reigning Koblenz Open champion will next play eighth seed Martin Klizan from Slovakia or Martin Cuevas of Uruguay.
2013 Braunschweig winner Florian Mayer fell in the opening round. The 34-year-old German, who made his 10th appearance at the €127,000 clay-court event and will end his areer after the US Open later this season, lost to Arthur de Greef from Belgium 6-7(1), 6-2, 2-6. The match lasted just under two hours of play.
Mixed fortunes for Spanish players
Czech qualifier Jan Satral knocked out #NextGenATP Spaniard and No. 3 seed Jaume Munar 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in one hour and 56 minutes. The tournament’s No. 2 Roberto Carballés-Baena from Tenerife fought past Norwegian teenager Casper Ruud 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3).
Main draw action continues in Braunschweig on Tuesday with 10 first round singles matches as well as five doubles.
