Two #NextGenATP players headlined Monday’s first round action at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad. Norwegian teenager Casper Ruud emerged victorious from the battle of the wild card entries with Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-0.
Ruud, who won a five-setter to reach the Roland Garros second round, fired 11aces and broke his opponent five times to seal victory in two hours and 38 minutes.
Next up for the 19-year-old from Oslo will be either Czech qualifier Zdenek Kolar or No. 7 seed and three-time Bastad champion David Ferrer of Spain.
Italian young gun Matteo Berrettini rallied sixth seeded Argentine Leonardo Mayer 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 22-year-old won 73 per cent of his first service points and 52 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and seven minutes.
Berrettini will face the winner of the match between Argentine qualifier Juan-Ignacio Londero and Gastao Elias of Portugal.
