Ruud Beats Ferrer To Reach Bastad Quarterfinals

Casper Ruud headlined second round action at the SkiStar Swedish Open on Thursday. The 19-year-old wild card entry from Norway knocked out the tournament’s No. 7 and two-time Bastad champion David Ferrer 7-5, 6-2.

Ruud came back from a 3-5 deficit in the opening set, breaking his opponent’s serve five times to seal victory in one hour and 15 minutes. The #NextGenATP star will face fourth seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals. The World No. 29 rallied past Gerald Melzer of Austria 1-6, 6-3, 6-5.

Federico Delbonis topped eighth favourite John Millman 6-4, 6-4. The 27-year-old from Argentina won 54 per cent of the total points played to prevail in one hour and 31 minutes. Next up for Delbonis will be No. 3 seed Fabio Foginini, who fought past local favourite Mikael Ymer 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. The encounter lasted two hours and five minutes.
