Nicolás Jarry of Chile continues his good run of form at the Generali Open on Tuesday. The 22-year-old, who advanced to the semi-finals in Hamburg last week, fought past Roberto Carballés-Baena of Spain 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 6-4 to reach the second round in Kitzbühel.

Jarry fired 15 aces, winning 87 per cent of his first service points to prevail after two hours and 36 minutes. Jarry will next face No. 3 seed Fernando Verdasco.

The freshly crowned German Open champion, Nikoloz Basilashvili, lost his opening match in the Tyrolean Alps to Laslo Djere of Serbia 6-3, 6-3. The World No. 35 from Georgia had to battle from the qualifying to the final in Hamburg and ran out of steam. Djere finished the encounter after one hour and 12 minutes.

The 23-year-old Senta native will next play Taro Daniel from Japan, who knocked off No. 7 seed Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6(3), 6-1 in one hour and 18 minutes.

Austrians delight home crowd

Later in the day, Dominic Thiem made his first appearance on Centre Court teaming up with his friend Dennis Novak. The Austrian duo battled past the all-Spanish combination of Jaume Munar and Roberto Carballés-Baena 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-7 to reach the second round in doubles. Novak and Thiem were trailing 3-6 in the match tie-break but fought back to secure victory in one hour and 39 minutes.

“It’s good start into the tournament”, said Thiem, who will open his home campaign in singles against on Wednesday against Martin Klizan. “Klizan is currently ranked much lower than he actually belongs. I have not played against him for a long time. The victory today was important and in general I feel ready.” The qualifier from Slovakia cruised past Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-2, 6-4 in just under one hour of play.

Matteo Berrettini, who clinched his maiden title on the ATP World Tour in Gstaad on Sunday, maintained the momentum, as he rallied past French veteran Gilles Simon 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 22-year-old Italian won 51 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 56 minutes. Next up for Berrettini will Radu Albot from Moldova.
