CINCINNATI, August 15, 2018
There were 10 first round and three second round ATP singles matches on Tuesday’s schedule at the Western & Southern Open. Leading the way was World No. 2 and 7-time champion Roger Federer, who is making his first Cincinnati appearance since 2015.
Federer’s first match since turning 37 on August 8 headlined the evening session, in which the Swiss maestro defeaeted Peter Gojowcyzk from Germany 6-4, 6-4. The Basel native fired 12 aces, winning 79 per cent of his first service points to advance in one hour and 12 minutes.

“I’m only feeling better every day that has gone by after Wimbledon. So it’s nice to have played a match so my last match is not the Anderson match, so you’ve kind of turned the page, I guess, in that regard. It’s a good thing,” Federer said.
The highest ranked player in the draw of the ATP Masters 1000 event will next take on Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, who beat Lucas Pouille of France 7-6(7), 6-4.
Denis Shapovalov also advanced to the third round, beating No. 14th seeded Briton Kyle Edmund 6-4, 7-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 52 minutes.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
1) The title defenses will begin Wednesday afternoon for the 2017 Western & Southern Open champions. WTA winner Garbiñe Mugurza will face Lesia Tsurenko while men’s champion Grigor Dimitrov will battle Mischa Zverev.
2) The winner of the last five women’s Grand Slam events will be on court today: Angelique Kerber (’18 Wimbledon) plays Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Simona Halep (’18 French Open) plays Ajla Tomljanovic, Caroline Wozniacki (’18 Australian Open) plays Kiki Bertens, Sloane Stephens (’17 U.S. Open) plays Tatjana Maria, and Muguruza (’17 Wimbledon) plays Tsurenko.
3) A win by Novak Djokovic against Adrian Mannarino would be his 28th at this tournament. That would tie the five-time W&S Open finalist with Lleyton Hewitt for most match wins in the Open Era by a player who has not won this title.
