Sloane Stephens avoided a surprise exit in the second round of the US Open and found an extra gear to get past the World No. 134 Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The 25-year-old US-American is certainly battle heartened as she comes through after two hours and 45 minutes. Stephens applauded her opponent off the court because she was well aware of how well the 21-year-old from the Ukraine played.
The defending champion next plays Victoria Azarenka, which could be an exceptional encounter. Azarenka eased past Daria Gavrilova from Australia 6-1, 6-2 in one hour and 22 minutes.
“I didn’t really think, you know, I’m going to get out as quick as possible in terms of time,” Azarenka said during her post-match press conference. “I was prepared to stay there as long as it needed to be. But it was good to see, like, the consistent level. There were no up-and-downs today. That’s what I’m more happy about.”
Thiem prevails
On Court 17, Dominic Thiem survived scare against US-American Steve Johnson, who finished runner-up at the Winston-Salem Open last Saturday. The 24-year-old Austrian won a topsy-turvy encounter 6-7, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in three hours and 34 minutes.
