Roberto Carballés Baena, No. 2 seed of the €127,000 Pekao Szczecin Open, fell in the second round on Wednesday. The 25-year-old Spaniard lost to Argentine qualifier Facundo Arguello 7-6(4), 6-3.
The World No. 314 saved nine of the 12 break points he faced, converting four of his own to prevail after two hours and nine minutes. Arguello will next challenge Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil, who knocked out No. 8 seed Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina emerged victorious from the all-Spanish battle with Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol, winning 7-5, 7-6(0). The 19-year-old qualifier won 55 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 52 minutes. Next up for Davidovich Fokina will be Gianlugi Quinzi from Italy, who defeated Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera of Chile 6-1, 6-3. The encounter lasted 62 minutes.
