Monica Puig advances the quarterfinals of the Coupe Banque Nationale présentée par IGA. The No. 3 seed from Puerto Rico benefited from the retirement of US-American Madison Brengle, leading 7-5, 3-0 after 61 minutes. The 26-year-old from Delaware was forced to stop playing due to a right hand injury.
Puig is now awaiting the winner of the encounter between No. 5 seed Sofia Kenin from the United States and Francoise Abanda of Canada.
Petra Martic continued her good run of form by reaching the second round of WTA International Event in Québec. The tournament’s No. 2 from Croatia, who clinched her first WTA singles title of any kind at the WTA 125K Oracle Challenger Series event in Chicago last weekend, eased past Naomi Broady of Great Britain 6-1, 6-1 in just 54 minutes.
“It definitely helped my confidence, and it’s what also helped me adjust to today better. I’m really on a good roll, and I hope to continue like this,” Martic said and will next face Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
