Laver Cup Chicago after Day 1

CHICAGO, September 22, 2018

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were beaten in the Laver Cup doubles on Friday, but Team Europe still took a 3-1 overnight lead in Chicago.

US-American Jack Sock, ranked World No. 1 in doubles, teamed up with South African Kevin Anderson to defeat the pairing of Federer and Djokovic, who have 34 Grand Slam titles between them, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 10-6 to give Team World their first point of the event.

Earlier in the day at the United Center, Grigor Dimitrov got the first point on the board for the defending champions from Europe. The 27-year-old Bulgarian defeated US-American Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4.

Next up was Briton Kyle Edmund, who beat another US-American, Jack Sock, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

“The chance to play tennis here is pretty much once in a lifetime,” Edmund was quoted on the Laver Cup website.

“You guys were cheering for Jack, which is fine, but the atmosphere was incredible, one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever played in.”

In the third match, Belgium’s David Goffin added to Europe’s advantage by defeating Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.
