Federer gained a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Nick Kyrgios.
“I’m very, very happy,” Federer told the crowd inside the United Center.
“I felt good from the beginning of the match and that’s not usual. Usually you need matches to get going and play your best in the third round or quarters of a tournament.
“Today, just from the beginning it was great, I played to my game plan, had wonderful support from my team and you guys. I really enjoyed myself.”
Later in the evening, Team World stroke back, as Kevin Anderson from South Africa has caused the biggest surprise at the Laver Cup this year so far, beating reigning Wimbledon as well as US Open champion Novak Djokovic 7-6(5), 5-7, 10-6.
“We’ve had some really close matches haven’t gone our way and I really wanted to put us back in there,” said Anderson.
In the final match of the day, Nick Kyrgios and US-American Jack Sock teamed up to beat Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria and Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3, 6-4.
