Ferrer will next face Sebastian Ofner, who emerged victorious from the all-Austrian battle with wild card entry Jürgen Melzer 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3. The 22-year-old struck 11 aces, winning 81 per cent of his first service points to seal victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
“Jürgen is still a tough opponent on a surface like this, which is very fast,” Ofner said after his win against his 36-year-old compatriot. “He is a very experienced player and made it into the top 10. So he knows what he has to do but I started to play very well in the second and third set and I am very happy with the win.”
Earlier in the day, top seed Marcel Granollers rallied past Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 7-5 in two hours and 35 minutes to take on Ernesto Escobedo in the stage of the final eight. The 22-year-old US-American knocked off Pedro Martínez of Spain 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 28 minutes.
