Pierre-Hugues Herbert advances to the quarterfinals of the Sparkasse Val Gardena Challenger Südtirol. The top seed of the €64,000 ATP Challenger event defeated Italian wild card entry Liam Caruana 7-6(6), 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
Herbert sent down 13 aces, winning 87 per cent of his first service points to secure victory in one hour and 22 minutes. The World No. 55 from France will next face the winner of the match between Oscar Otte from Germany and No. 5 seed Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania.
Simone Bolelli has reached the stage of the final eight at Ortisei for the first time in six years. The Italian, who celebrated his 33th birthday on Monday, beat in-form Russian qualifier Kirill Kivattsev 6-3, 6-2. Bolelli converted four of his seven break points to prevail after one hour and five minutes. He awaits either Dustin Brown from Germany or Austria’s Dennis Novak.
