Four of Thursday’s five second round matches at the €64,000 Sparkasse Val Gardena Challenger Südtirol went the distance. Dennis Novak of Austria fought past Dustin Brown from Germany 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to set a quarterfinal clash with Italian veteran Simone Bolelli. Novak withstood 17 aces, hitting nine of his own to prevail after one hour and 31 minutes.
Earlier on Centre Court, Ricardas Berankis defeated German Oscar Otte 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The 2015 Ortisei champion from Lithuania capitalized on five of his nine break point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 35 minutes. Berankis will next take on top seeded Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Ugo Humbert emerged vicrorious from the all-French encounter with Quentin Halys 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-5. The No. 6 seed from Metz outpointed his compatriot 99-90 after one hour and 48 minutes. Humbert will next take on Constant Lestienne, another Frenchman, who Italian wild card entry Jannik Sinner 6-7(6), 7-5, 7-5 in the final match of the day.
In the opening match Mats Moraing won in straight sets against fellow German Kevin Krawietz. The 26-year-old from Mühlheim an der Ruhr secured a 6-3, 7-5 victory in one hour and eight minutes. Moraing will will next play Gregoire Barrere from France.
