Marco Trungelliti headlined Friday’s quarterfinals action at the Sánchez-Casal Mapfre. The No. 3 seed from Argentina rallied past Pedro Sousa from Portugal, the fifth favourite of the €43,000 ATP Challenger event, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Trungelliti converted eight of his 11 break point chances to prevail after one hour and 53 minutes. “It was a match at high level against a tough opponent. I am happy the way I played in the final set,” Trungelliti said.
The World No. 129 will next challenge top seed Roberto Carballés Baena of Spain, who eased past Alessandro Giannessi of Italy 6-2, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, Filippo Baldi of Italy eased past Serbian qualifier Miljan Zekic 6-3, 6-3 to face Pedro Martínez of Spain in the semi-finals. Martínez defeated Italian Lorenzo Giustino 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 46 minutes.
“I played well, hit a lot of winners and did’t make that many errors. I am pleased to reach the semi-finals,” Baldi commented.
