The first four players advanced to the quarterfinals of the Charlottesville Men’s Pro Challenger, led by top seed Bradley Klahn, who eased past Briton James Ward 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday evening.

The World No. 101 from the United States, who entered the main draw of the $75,000 ATP Challenger event with a wild card, sent down seven aces, winning 83 per cent of his first service points to finish the encounter in one hour and four minutes. Klahn will next take on compatriot Bjorn Fratangelo, who earned a hard-fought win over Croatian young gun Nino Serdarusic. The 25-year-old Pittsburgh native  converted three of his six break point opportunities to seal a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in one hour and 42 minutes.

Earlier in the day, Peter Polansky defeated Tobias Kamke from Germany 7-5, 7-5. The No. 8 seed from Canada won 53 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 39 minutes. Up next for Polansky will be Jelle Sels. The 23-year-old from the Netherlands beat Petros Chrysochos of Cyprus 6-1, 7-6(4). The encounter lasted one hour and 33 minutes.

Paes/Reyes-Varela doubles top seeds

India’s tennis legend Leander Paes will headline the doubles competition at Boar’s Head Resort. Paes, who has clinched eight doubles and 10 mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, will team up with Mexican Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela. The top seeds will open their title bid on Thursday against Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia and Nino Serdarusic.
