The quarterfinals of the Challenger Eckental are set with Ruben Bemelmans and Evgeny Donskoy being the only two seeded player left in the singles draw.
Bemelmans, 2014 champion at the House of Sports, defeated German Oscar Otte 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday evening. The No. 7 seed from Belgium was in control of the match, outpointing his opponent 57-37 to advance in only 53 minutes.
Bemelmans will next face Daniel Masur. Alongside Matthias Bachinger, the 23-year-old wild card entry is still flying the German flag in the singles tournament. Masur fought past Italian veteran Simone Bolelli 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and nine minutes.
Earlier in the day, Donskoy rallied past French lucky loser Benjamin Bonzi 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. The No. 4 seed from Russia saved eight of the 10 break points he faced, capitalizing on three of his own chances to prevail after two hours and 13 minutes. Next up for Donskoy will be Albano Olivetti. The qualifier from France beat Alexander Bublik, another lucky loser in the 32-man-draw of the €43,000 ATP Challenger event, 6-2, 7-6(3). The encounter lasted 67 minutes.
Hubert Hurkacz, the tournament’s No. 2, retired in his second round match with Lukas Rosol from the Czech Republic. The World No. 79 was trailing 2-5 when he was forced to stop playing. Rosol moved on to take on Frenchman Antoine Hoang in the stage of the final eight.
