MILAN, November 9, 2018
The Top 2 seeds Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur advanced to the semi-finals of the Next Gen ATP Finals and were looking to win their respective groups with a final round robin victory on Thursday. The two will be joined by Andrey Rublev and Jaume Munar in the stage of the final four in Milan.
Munar defeated US-American Frances Tiafoe 4-1, 4-3(3), 4-1 in 56 minutes to earn his first victory of the tournament.
“I did what I had to do, and it’s not in my hands anymore. Maybe we can buy a Greek flag or whatever for support,” said Munar, who needed the support from Tsitsipas to advance. “But it’s not in my hands anymore. At least I felt like I was a good tennis player out there today, so this is important for me. At least I will live with that sensation.”
Tsitsipas deliverd later in the evening, winning 4-1, 4-3(2), 4-1 against Hubert Hurkacz from Poland. The 20-year-old Athens native secured an unbeaten 3-0 record to top Group A.
Tsitsipas will take on Andrey Rublev in the semis. The 21-year-old Russian beat Italian wild card entry Liam Caruana 4-3(7), 4-1, 4-2 in 62 minutes.
Alex de Minaur edged out US-American Taylor Fritz 4-3(8), 4-1, 4-2 to win Group B. The Australian teenager will meet Munar.
