The USTA announced that Rebecca Peterson of Stockholm, Sweden headlines the initial player acceptance list for the Dow Tennis Classic, a $100,000 USTA Pro Circuit event, held at the Greater Midland Tennis Center, January 28 – February 3.
The tournament is the third USTA Women’s Competitive Pathway event of the 2019 season and is the only women’s event scheduled to take place in Michigan this year.
Currently No. 62, Peterson is the highest-ranked of the 20 women who received direct acceptance into the thirty-two player main draw. Twenty-four players will compete in the qualifying tournament January 28-29, for six other berths. The local tournament organizers and the USTA will also award wild card entries to complete the field.
In late 2018, the 23-year old reached a career-high ranking of No. 52 in the world. Earlier that year Peterson notched her first Grand Slam main draw win at Roland Garros when she defeated Su-wei Hsieh. Peterson then went on to reach R2 of Wimbledon and R3 of the US Open later that summer. In 2015 she picked up her first WTA doubles title with Ysaline Bonaventure at the Rio Open. Peterson holds a combined 17 singles and doubles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour (11 in singles, 6 in doubles).
Joining Peterson in the main draw is 2018 Dow Tennis Classic singles champion Madison Brengle; two-time Dow Tennis Classic singles champion Tatjana Maria; 2009 US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer; and 2013 Dow Tennis Classic singles champion Lauren Davis. Notable names expected to compete in qualifying include 2013 Wimbledon semifinalist Sabine Lisicki and 2017 Dow Tennis Classic semifinalist Katherine Sebov.
