COLUMBUS, January 12, 2019
Two wild card entries headline the semi-finals line-up of the January Columbus Challenger. Mikael Torpegaard and Jeffrey John Wolf advanced to the stage of the final four of the ATP Challenger 80 event held at Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center on Friday.
Torpegaard rallied past Frenchman Vincent Millot 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-0. The 24-year-old from Denmark, who clinched his maiden Challenger crown here in Columbus in September 2016, outpointed his opponent 107-97 in two hours and 34 minutes.
Torpegaard will next take on Bernabé Zapata Miralles of Spain, the last seeded player left in the singles draw. The tournament’s No. 12 edged past Lucas Miedler of Austria 7-6(4), 6-2 in one hour and 27 minutes.
Later in the day, Jeffrey John Wolf defeated Germany’s Jan Choinski 6-2, 6-1. The World No. 366 from the United States saved both break points he faced, converting four of his own chances to secure victory in one hour and 19 minutes.
In his first semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour, Wolf will face Scott Griekspoor from the Netherlands. The 28-year-old Haarlem native fought past No. 4 seed Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 38 minutes.
