John McEnroe

STARNBERG, February 16, 2019

John McEnroe celebrates his 60th birthday today. The US-American, who was born in Wiesbaden, West Germany, made history in 1977 at the age of 18 when he became the youngest man ever to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon – a feat that foreshadowed the record-breaking 149 tennis titles he would win over the course of his career. McEnroe clinched seven Grand Slam single titles, including four US Open titles and three Wimbledon titles, and added nine Grand Slam doubles trophies.

The left-hander retired from the professional tour at the end of 1992 but still plays tennis, but for fun, saying he loves the game more now than when he was the No. 1 in the world.

McEnroe was also known for his on-court tirades. His most famous outburst happened in Stockholm in 1984.

Happy birthday, Big Mac!
