Napolitano Upsets Donskoy To Reach Bergamo Challenger Quarterfinals

BERGAMO, February 21, 2019

Stefano Napolitano headlined Thursday’s third round action at the 13th edition of the Internazionali di Tennis Trofeo Faip-Perrel in Bergamo. The No. 14 seed from Italy knocked out the tournament’s No. 1 Evgeny Donskoy of Russia 6-3, 7-6(10).

Napolitano saved five of the six break point chances he faced, converting two of his own to secure victory in one hour and 49 minutes.

The point of the match, however, goes to Donskoy:

Napolitano will next take on Frenchman Tristan Lamasine, who beat Italian ITF entry Raul Brancaccio 6-3, 6-4. The encounter lasted 62 minutes.

Earlier in the day, 17-year-old Jannik Sinner from South Tyrol advanced to his first quarterfinal at ATP Challenger level. The teenager from Aan Candido, who entered the main draw with a wild card, fought past Viktor Galovic of Croatia 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. Sinner broke his opponent’s serve five times, winning one point more in the end. He converted his first match point after one hour and 54 minutes.

Up next for Sinner will be compatriot Gianluigi Quinzi. The 23-year-old Citadella native defeated Elliot Benchetrit of France 7-6(8), 6-2. Quinzi rallied from a break down in the opening set to advance after one hour and 20 minutes.
