MELBOURNE, January 27, 2019

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut became the eighth team in history to win the men’s doubles titles at all four Grand Slams. The all-French combination beat Henri Kontinen from Finland and John Peers of Australia 6-4, 7-6(1) in Sunday’s Australian Open final.

Herbert/Mahut won the teams’ only previous Grand Slam meeting at Wimbledon two years ago and also had the better ending in Melbourne this time. The No. 5 seeds finished the encounter after one hour and 38 minutes.

“We started off here in 2015 – our first tournament together, and we went all the way to the final. We missed the title by one match, but we did not know at that time if we would be in a final again. And now we’ve won all the Grand Slams together,” Herbert said.

“Today, I didn’t have it in mind, because I thought I was sure it would have been really difficult to play if I was just focused on just to win this tournament, because it was the one missing,” said Mahut. “I was just focused on the game, just focused on what I have to do on court to be good, because in front of us we had a really good team to beat.”
