Djokovic will additionally look to match Rafael Nadal‘s record of 33 ATP Masters 1000 titles. Nadal also seeks a sixth trophy overall in the desert, having won three singles and two doubles titles.

World No. 1 Djokovic will open his title bid against a qualifier, facing either US-American Bjorn Fratangelo or Swedish youngster Elias Ymer. Nadal awaits the winner of the match betwenn Japanese qualifier Tatsuma Ito and wild card entry Jared Donaldson from the United States.
No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev will start his campaign in the Californian desert after a first round bye against Martin Klizan of Slovakia or brother Mischa. Reigning Dubai champion Federer is seeded fourth and will play either Peter Gojowczyk from Germany or Italy’s Andreas Seppi in his second round match.
