KOBLENZ, March 12, 2019
Held during the first week of the Australian Open, the Koblenz Open made its debut on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2017. Located in Germany, the tournament is the first of the season in Europe and signals the start of an indoor swing that moves from France to Hungary and Italy.
A fourth edition of the indoor hard-court event is going to take place in 2020. This was announced by organizer and tournament director Heiko Hampel on Monday.
“The city of Koblenz has made a name for the tournament and plans to support the event to an even greater extend. I would like to thank Mayor David Langner and his team, as well as our loyal and reliable sponsors,” Hampel explained.
“There were also important talks with the ATP. The reform of the Challenger Tour had a big impact, and the ATP has realized that certain points should be communicated much earlier. Especially the facts that have a strong financial impact. For us, the tournament caused additional costs of €15,000 because of higher accommodation costs and higher expenses for the umpires.”
The next edition of the Koblenz Open will be held from 13 to 19 January 2020, but Hampl stated: “I would like to switch to the second week of the Australian Open and the ATP will give us the spot in the calendar if we keep the old date for another year. We were pioneers with this date, which did not exist for 25 years.”
