David Goffin, top seed of the $162,480 Arizona Tennis Classic, opened his title bid with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 win over Roberto Carballés Baena of Spain on Wednesday evening at the Phoenix Country Club.
The World No. 21, who entered the main draw of the ATP Challenger 125 hard-court event with a wild card, sent down eight aces, winning 82 per cent of his first service points to gain his second victory over the 25-year-old Tenerife native in as many meetings between the two. The encounter lasted one hour and six minutes.
Goffin will next take on Norwegian Next Gen star Casper Ruud, who rallied past Mikael Ymer 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. The 20-year-old from Oslo outpointed his opponent 80-68 after one hour and 40 minutes.

Earlier in the day, No. 2 seed Jeremy Chardy fell in the second round. Lorenzo Sonego knocked out the French veteran 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. The 23-year-old Italian capitalized on four of his six break point chances to prevail after one hour and 43 minutes. Next up for Sonego will be US-American Ryan Harrison, who battled past South African youngster Lloyd Harris 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
No. 3 seed John Millman also had to fight hard to overcome Lukas Lacko from Slovakia 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4) in two hours and 27 minutes. The World No. 42 from Australia will next face Kamil Majchrzak of Poland.
