The top seed of the € 42,500 ATP Challenger Intermek Tennis Cup fell on quarterfinals Friday in Cordenons.
Sixth seed Roberto Carballés-Baena knocked off the tournament’s top favourite and fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Viῆolas, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the pair’s third tour meeting, the 22-year-old from Tenerife emerged victorious for the first time, saving six of the eight break points he faced to prevail after two hours and 39 minutes.
In his first semi-finals of the season, Carballés-Baena will take on Adrian Ungur next. The 30-year-old Romanian defeated fourth seed Kenny de Schepper, winning 6-4, 7-6. Ungur won 63% of his first service points and converted three of his five points to advance after one hour and 50 minutes.
Second seed Paolo Lorenzi won the all-Italian-affair against Filippo Volandri 7-6, 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes. The 33-year-old saved three of the seven break points he faced to advance to the round of the final four.
Lorenzi will face third seed Filip Krajinovic. The 23-year-old Serbian beat Antonio Veic, winning 7-6, 6-3. Krajinovic won 78% of his first service points and capitalized on three of his nine break point opportunities to close the match after one hour and 31 minutes.
